Our Daily Cocktail of Toxins

Chemicals in Food

Food is a major source of toxins that ends up in our bodies. Commercial food contains huge amounts of all sorts of unnatural and poisoning substances. Some, you probably would not even think of, because not all are labeled on the products you buy, i.e. they are hidden.

Toxins find their way into the foods and drinks during the course of growing, processing and packaging. Many harmful chemicals are used and added on purpose (growh hormones, artificial colorants, bulk agents ect.).

You may wonder (as I did), why toxic chemicals are allowed in food? Have they not been tested for safety?

Sure, bu......t.... Look into the past. Since the beginning of the industrial era numerous “laboratory inventions” have been approved as safe only to be banned after years of use, because of the destructive health effects that came to bear.

Other poisonous substances are not meant to be in the food, such as evaporatad molecules from plastic packages or dioxins in eggs. All end up in the body every day and accumulate.

Why should you worry about it? Toxins can accumulate in the body and upset its biochemistry, especially the hormone and nervous system as studies have shown. They can cause a wide range of maladies like migraine, allergies and digestive disorders.

Suspect Additives, Artificials and Flavour enhancers
Labeled and unlabeled

Eating commercial items is a bit like tapping in the dark without clearly knowing what really goes down the throat. Labels such as natural, no preservatives added, no artificial colour, are often misleading. When you look at the ingredients of some so called “natural” products, you may be surprised how many food toxins you will find on the list.

As convenient as ready-made meals are, they are not much more then toxic cocktails. They are designed to look and taste good (artificial colors, flavour enhancer), to extend shelf life (preservatives) and to reduce costs and increase profits (fillers) for manufacturers. Less priority is given to the value of nutrients.

Food Additives
Even though all of these ingredients are said to be safe for consumtion, they rob you of energy and can make you sick. Avoiding all dietary toxins is some what “mission impossible”, nevertheless, you can reduce the intake of many, and avoid at least the most nasty ones.

Personally, I always read the labels when I go shopping for new goods. What has caught my eyes is that MSG, Aspartame, Soya and Sugar are just about everywhere included. And those are the most common ones that are known for their adverse effects, although, Sugar is not really toxic, but it causes cravings and weight gain.

Labeled Ingredients

Artificial sweetener line Sacharin, Acesulphame K and Aspartame (E 951) are substitutes for sugar. Foods and drinks that are labeled sugar-free, light or zero calories contain it. Consuming lots of such foods and on a regular basis can cause diarrhoea and other problems.

MSG (Monosodium Glutamate - E 621) is an artifical flavor enhancement and is present in most instant products like soups, sauces and Chinese food. Other names for it are Yeast Extract, Textured Protein, Hydrolyzed Plant Extract, Sodium or Calcium Caseinate.

MSG is a known excitotoxin, which means it overstimulates the brain cells to death. Short term symptoms include headache, dizzy feeling, visual disturbances, hyperactivity, mood swings and depression.

I once had a look at a packet of chips which said in big letters: No added MSG. This gives me, the consumers the impression, that it does not contain MSG at all in the product, yes?

Well, it only says “no added”, which only relates to the end product. It may have been used during the process of making some sort of ingredients. The factory who made the chips may have bought some pre-made components from an other company (for example yeast extract) and does not know exactly what's in it. Anyway, the Food and Drug Administration does not oblige it to be listed as an ingredient.

While Soya in small amounts is said to be healthy, it can cause havoc when consumed a lot. Soya naturally contains high amounts of hormone like compounds such as estrogen (similar to the estrogen in human bodies). Absorbed by the body, they act like hormones but not being truly natural may disturb women's reproductive systems.

Unlabeled Ingredients

Residues from Pesticides, Herbicides, Fungicides - Allmost all salads, vegetables and fruits (fresh and canned) are treated with various toxic chemicals during their growth, storage and transport - except the organic ones.

According to the Environmental Working Group, the following fruits and veges are most contaminated with pollutants: Celery, Peppers, Lettuces, Apples, Peaches and Strawberries. It is best to buy them organic.

Dairy, meat and fish are produced with the aid of Antibiotica, Bovine Growth Hormones and polluted with envirnonmental toxins like Dioxins and many others.

Oil seeds like flax (linseed) and sunflower are capable of absorbing Heavy Metals like Cadmium from the soil.

Poisoning Chemicals in Food from Package

Think about, how many times you eat food that has been stored in plastic? The use of plastics has increased dramatically over the last decades. It is hard to imagine doing without it. Used just about for everything to handle food: water bottles, cans, packaging and storage containers, microwave oven dishes, bags, cooking utensils, cutlery, wrappings ect. - beside all the other household utensils.

As handy as these materials may seem to be, plastic contains highly toxic particles which can migrate into the foods and drinks - ending up in your body. Its devastating health effects have been recognised and studied only in the recent years. And its long term negative impacts are still to come.

Plastic compounds are capable of accumulating in humans and animals, affecting the hormonal and other functions. There is also a strong link to obesity as the body stores it in the fatty cells as well.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) and Phthalates are used extensively to make Polyvinyl chloride (PVC, plastic no 3) and epoxy resins. More than 3 million tons are produced every year. Products like tins, cans (inner lining), microwave oven dishes and bottles (beside many other everyday items) may contain it.

Both are Types of Toxins that may disturb the endocrine system, are linked to infertility (women and man) and suspect to breast cancer. Such particles are not easily to detox from within the system.

According to various sources, 90% of the world population has plastic residues in their bodies. Think about this!

The best you can do for yourself and for your loved ones is to avoid plastic as much as possible to minimize the risk of health problems associated with it.

Tip: Heat increases the evaporation of plastics into foods. Use glass bowls in the microwave (best would be, not to use microwaves at all). Food with a high acid, fat, oil or sugar content are more vulnerable to absorb plastic substances. Avoid canned goods like tomatoes, coconut and fruits.

Solution: Food should be nourishing you not damaging! Be aware of all the Food Toxins and avoid them as much as you can. Shop smart, read the labels and go for organic fresh fruits and vegebables.
